I spotted an intriguing insect in the hawthorn along the roads at the top of Speltham Hill, called a St Mark’s Fly. These boot polish black flies, are also known as Hawthorn Flies and are common at this time of year. They have long legs that dangle down as they hover around the hedges giving them the appearance of tiny parachutists.
