In the last few weeks of September I have noticed a plethora of butterflies on the ivy flowers in the hedgerow. As one of the last flowering plants, the ivy flower is particularly important to pollinators and I'm cheered to see that it is in abundance in the hedgerows around Rushmere Farm. I've spotted plenty of Red Admirals, Peacock Butterflies and even the odd Comma.
As well as butterflies you'll find plenty of hoverflies and at night, moths. I recently attended a moth night at Gilbert White's House & Gardens and was treated to an evening of banded sallows, common marbled carpets, brimstones and large yellow underwings as well as the bats that joined us to dance in the night sky above us.
